How Often You Should Clean Your Carpets

odor-img3-184x184The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI), and all major carpet manufacturers recommend that you should have your carpets professionally cleaned every 6 to 12 months.

But Why?

Your carpets actually serve a bigger role in your home than you thought. We think of carpet as providing soft landing for our feet, adding visual appeal to our home and even a nice place to cuddle up by the fire. But, they actually act as an air filtering system for your home.

If you have ever noticed dark lines around the baseboard of your walls than you can see evidence of the filtering system in action. Because of the air pressure in your home, air will filter its way down through your flooring & out through the edges of your walls.

By capturing the particles, dust mite droppings, bacteria etc – it allows the the soil to be suspended in the carpet until you vacuum it up. By vacuuming 3-5 times per week you can keep a handle on the dry soil. The things that need to be professionally cleaned are the oily residues that develop from skin contact, airborne oils from cooking, spills, pet accidents, etc.

However, let this filter get too full (dirty) and it actually can act against you. By cleaning this “filter” every 6-12 months you will remove all the building up contaminants and irritants that are being held in the carpet and thus enjoy a healthier environment.

The second reason that you should clean your carpets every 6-12 months is because thesoil in your carpet actually acts as an abrasive material which causes your carpet fibers to wear and dull.

Often times we see people wait years before cleaning the carpets. Once soil and abrasive material  has been in the carpet for too long – it actually scratches the carpet fibers and causes it not to reflect light properly. The lack of light reflection will cause a carpet to look dingy or soiled – even when their is no soil present.

By cleaning every 6-12 months you will avoid premature wear, early replacement costs, having an unhealthy home & being embarrassed when your friends or family come over!
